Home Safety Surveys Available

Image your home filling with black smoke. What would you do? Are you prepared for an emergency in your home? In early January of 2020, a New Hope family had a fire in a basement of their home. In this case, the residents were able to safely extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher and instructions they had obtained by participating in a free Home Safety Survey program provided by the West Metro Fire-Rescue District. Without the proper preparation, smoke alarms, fire extinguisher and the knowledge to safely handle this situation, this could have been a devastating fire.

Thinking ahead and taking action can prevent it from happening to you. The Home Safety Survey typically takes 60 - 90 minutes. Members of the fire department will walk through your home with you to identify hazards and provide measures and information to improve your safety. They will check all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to verify that they are working and in the proper locations. You will receive the following items from a survey:

  • A walk-thru of your home checking for fire hazards and advice on how to mitigate any hazards found.
  • Assistance with developing a fire escape plan and how to conduct a family fire drill
  • Verification that you have properly located smoke detectors
o Free replacement of old smoke detectors, if needed
o Free replacement of batteries in your smoke detectors, if needed
o Free additional smoke detectors installed, if needed
  • Verification that you have a properly located carbon monoxide detector
o Free additional digital carbon monoxide detector, if needed
  • Free fire extinguisher, if needed
  • Additional items to assist you in home safety.

Prevention and the availability of properly located alarms, devices, and emergency procedures can dramatically enhance your family’s chance of survival.
