Tax Return Scams and How to Help Protect Yourself
Posted on 01/20/2021
Tax season means a significant increase in scammers attempting to take advantage of residents by posing as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If you receive a phone call, email, letter or fax from anyone claiming to be from the IRS, do not provide any personal information and verify them by calling 800.829.1040. Any unsolicited email purporting to be from the IRS is a scam.

Never provide your social security number or any other personal information to telemarketers, or in response to text messages or emails.

Never click on links or attachments in emails from unknown senders.

If you don’t receive your IRS tax refund within one month of filing, you can check its status on the IRS webpage (irs.gov) or by calling 800.908.4490.
