City ordinance requires every household and business to have garbage collection at least once a week. New Hope currently licenses several residential and commercial garbage service providers.

Licensed garbage haulers collect trash on Tuesdays for New Hope homes south of 42nd Avenue and on Wednesdays for homes north of 42nd Avenue. Garbage containers should be set at the curb either the night before or the day of the scheduled pickup by 6 a.m. and returned to a storage location that is either inside or screened from view from the street. Each hauler provides their own garbage cart or dumpster.

A summary of services and rates for haulers is compiled by the Hennepin Recycling Group (HRG) each year. Prices are subject to change and generally do not include taxes or fees. Call the hauler for details.

Consider organizing trash collection within your neighborhood with your neighbors. It's a great way to reduce the number of heavy trucks driving through your neighborhood and may result in reduced costs.

    Consider Self-Organizing Trash Collection

    The New Hope City Council has been exploring organized garbage collection since April 2017. The city has solicited feedback on the topic in the form of a survey and listening session. At the April 16, 2018 work session, the City Council directed staff to take the following steps:

    1. Reduce the number of refuse hauler licenses available in the city to four, through attrition.
    2. Coordinate with city engineer to provide an understanding of potential garbage truck impacts in relation to the city's Pavement Management Plan.
    3. Research possibility of single-sided garbage collection.
    4. Create materials outlining a process for residents interested in organizing garbage collection within their neighborhood on their own initiative.

    In response to the request to create materials outlining a process for “self-organizing” trash collection, staff created a Neighborhood Organized Trash Collection Guide for residents that are interested in arranging to use one hauler to collect trash within a specified area. Such efforts would be initiated by neighborhood residents, not the city, and may result in reduced costs.

    Household Hazardous Waste and Problem Materials

    The county operates a facility in Brooklyn Park to manage the disposal of household hazardous waste and problem materials. These are common household items that may be toxic and could pollute the air, land and water if disposed of improperly.

    The Hennepin County Recycling Center and Transfer Station is located at 8100 Jefferson Highway. The transfer station is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed on Sundays, Mondays and holidays.

    Household Hazardous Waste

    • Paint Products: latex/oil based paints, thinners, strippers, solvents, varnishes, lacquers, etc.
    • Auto Products: car batteries, used oil, oil filters, used antifreeze, car wax, brake fluids, transmission fluids
    • Cleaning Products: oven cleaners, drain cleaners, bleach, spot removers, detergents, window cleaners, floor cleaners, polishes, metal cleaners
    • Flammables: gasoline, diesel, kerosene
    • Garden Products: pesticides, weed killers, fertilizers, ant/rodent poisons, flea powders
    • Miscellaneous: photographic chemicals, lighter fluid, moth balls, swimming
      pool chemicals, glues, epoxy, etc.

    Problem Materials

    • Mercury Items: fluorescent/HID lamps, rechargeable/cordless appliances, household batteries
    • Electronics: camcorders, personal computers/monitors, radios, stereos, CD/DVD players, televisions, VCR’s, telephones (fee charged for TVs, computer monitors, laptops)
    • Tires: (fee charged)
    • Appliances: air conditioner, dehumidifier, dishwasher, dryer, washer, freezer, furnace, garbage disposal, microwave, oven/stove, trash compactor, water heater. (fee charged).
    • Gas Air Conditioners and Gas Refrigerators: (fee charged) Call for an appointment.
    • Media: computer discs, CDs, DVDs, game cartridges, toner cartridges.
    • Propane/gas cylinders: household only, one-pound non-refillable containers.

    Curbside Recycling

    New Hope provides curbside recycling through Hennepin Recycling Group (HRG) to single-family homes, town homes and small apartment buildings with fewer than eight units. Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as the garbage (on Tuesdays for New Hope homes south of 42nd Avenue, and on Wednesdays for homes north of 42nd Avenue). 

    New Hope does not provide contracted recycling services for large apartment buildings or businesses, but city ordinance requires all apartment owners to provide residents a convenient recycling service if they do not qualify for the HRG program.

    Recycling offered by HRG is Single Sort Recycling. Put acceptable recyclable items together in the recycling cart and roll it to the end of your driveway by 6:30 a.m. on your collection day. Set it at the curb facing the street, handle toward the house. Make sure the cart is at least three feet from any object so the automated collection truck can pick it up.

    Place these items in your cart loose (do not use plastic bags):

    • Plastic: bottles, jugs, cups, containers (leave lids on)
    • Paper: mail, magazines, newspaper, boxes, cardboard, cereal/cracker boxes
    • Cartons: milk cartons, soup cartons, juice boxes
    • Glass: bottles, jars
    • Metal: food and beverage cans; scrap metal less than 10 pounds and shorter than 18 inches in all directions. No wire or rods.

    These items are not accepted for curbside recycling:

    • Garbage, food waste, diapers
    • Leaves, grass, brush
    • Plastic bags and wrap
    • Wood and drywall
    • Refrigerated or frozen food boxes and pizza boxes
    • Needles and nails
    • Styrofoam™ cups, plates and packaging
    • Microwaveable food trays
    • Paper towels, plates, napkins and tissues
    • Window glass, drinking glasses, mirrors, light bulbs
    • Motor oil bottles and other containers that held hazardous products

    Recycling Carts

    Recycling carts are available in 35, 64, and 96-gallon varieties. If you need a cart, have a broken cart, or would like to request a different size or additional cart, please call HRG administration at 763-493-8006. There is no additional charge for a cart exchange.

    Holiday Collection

    Recycling is not collected on the major holidays of New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Recycling days that are scheduled on or after these holidays will be pushed back one day (if a holiday falls on a weekend, recycling collection is on the regular day). For example, if your normal recycling day is on a Friday and Christmas is on Thursday, your recycling will be collected on Saturday.

    Missed Collection

    If your recycling was out at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on collection day, and was not picked up by 6:30 p.m., please contact HRG Administration, 763-493-8006 by noon the next business day to report it was missed and to schedule a pickup. Leave a message if calling after hours.

    Moving In / Moving Out

    When residents move into an existing home there should be a recycling cart already at the home. If no cart is present when you move into a home, please call HRG Administration at 763-493-8006. Residents moving out should leave their empty recycling cart in the garage for the next resident.

    Residents can contact any of the licensed garbage haulers listed on the website to receive quotes on garbage services. The city does not provide garbage service at this time.

    Yard Waste Disposal

    Maple Grove Yard Waste Site

    The city provides residents with a convenient drop-off site in Maple Grove for grass, leaves, small brush, tree limbs 10 inches or less in diameter, and small quantities of sod, dirt and gravel. Verification that you are a resident of New Hope is required. 

    The yard waste site is open from April 1 to November 30, weather permitting. Site hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The facility is closed Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day. The site is located at 10300 Maple Grove Parkway N.

    Garbage Hauler Pickup

    Every licensed garbage hauler must offer yard waste collection. They may charge additional fees for the service. Call your garbage hauler for details

    Curbside Cleanup Event

    Every other year, the Hennepin Recycling Group (HRG) coordinates a special bulky waste curbside cleanup event in the cities of New Hope and Crystal for those residents that pay for the curbside recycling program (single-family through eight-unit households). The next curbside cleanup event is scheduled for 2020.

    Items accepted at curbside for the most recent special cleanup event included:

    • unusable furniture
      (such as couches, chairs, matresses)
    • general household junk
      (up to 100 pounds per item)
    • scrap metal
    • appliances
