Investigations Division

The Investigations Division is overseen by Captain Scott Slawson and currently includes 4 Detectives, 2 School Resource Officers, a Violent Offender Task Force Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, and our Support Services staff. 

Detectives

Four detectives investigate the variety of crimes reported to our Patrol Division. They interview suspects, witnesses, and victims, and present cases to the city and county attorneys for prosecution. In addition, they conduct background investigations for city employment as well as for business licenses when required.

School Resource Officers

Two School Resource Officers currently work within Cooper Senior High School.  In addition to maintaining a safe and secure environment, they also investigate cases involving juveniles.

Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force

One investigator is assigned to the Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force. This task force is a VCET (Violent Crime Enforcement Team) which is a joint-project of several law enforcement agencies that can conduct specialized investigations including violent crime and narcotics among its’ member cities.

Crime Prevention Officer

The Crime Prevention Officer is responsible to coordinate Crime Prevention and Community Services programs for the Police Department.  Some of the programs include: Neighborhood Watch, National Night Out, Safety Camp, Bike Rodeo, Holiday Toy Drive.

The Crime Prevention Officer is available to present to groups on a variety of crime prevention and safety topics.  Please see the Community Services and Crime Prevention page for additional information on programs and resources. 

The Crime Prevention officer is also a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician as well as an instructor of Defensive Driving classes offered for staff and the public through parks and recreation.

Support Services

Support Services provide a variety of technical, clerical, and information technology services important to the operation of the Police Department. Other duties of this division include customer service, records management, data practices, state compliance requirements, technology support, and the retention, processing, and dissemination of police reports.
