The New Hope City Council serves as the legislative and policy-making body for the City of New Hope. The mayor presides over council meetings and represents the city at public events and in relationships with other governmental entities. In all other respects, the mayor and council members share the same authority and responsibilities. The mayor and four council members all serve the community at large and are elected for four years in alternating terms.
The primary role of the mayor and council members is to make decisions on behalf of New Hope residents. They are responsible for adopting and overseeing the City’s annual budget, setting the annual property tax levy, and identifying various funding sources to support city operations. Additionally, the council focuses on the community's goals, major projects, and long-term objectives, including land use, redevelopment, capital improvements, equipment and infrastructure, as well as strategic planning.
The City Council is committed to engaging and involving residents in the decision-making process. This is achieved through effective communication, public input at meetings and hearings, neighborhood gatherings, advisory commissions, and opportunities for participation in civic and business organizations and community groups.
